A Rotary Champion

Rotary calls on us to serve our community and Linton Adams is truly a champion in that respect. As a member of Rotary Hutt City, he has led a 30 year project to redevelop and extend what has become a major community asset in the Hutt Valley: the Hutt River Trail. At the same time, Linton immediately acknowledges the leadership of Robin Maud, a former club member, and the support of eight Rotary clubs across the valley.

From the project's beginnings in 1993, when it was envisaged as a way of marking the 50th anniversary of the founding of Rotary Hutt City, the redeveloped trail now spans 54 kilometres of walking and cycling pathways along both sides of the river. It is extensively used by walkers, runners and cyclists and is envisaged in time to connect with the Remutaka Rail Trail and the Great Harbour Way, potentially rivalling the Otago Rail Trail as a national asset.

Linton's efforts, not just on the river trail project, but also in supporting other club projects and Rotary International's Polio Plus programme, have recently featured in Newsroom, an independent news site:

Cans for a Cause

This year, the Club set itself the goal of gathering 1000 cans of food to be donated to the Lower Hutt Foodbank. While ambitious (and a significant increase over the prior year effort), the Club over-achieved that goal, delivering 1020 cans to the Foodbank.

Members tapped their business and personal networks, with several members - Andy Soper, Linton Adams, Ian Orsborn, Michael Markham and Andy Barker - gathering 100 or more cans. This collective effort demonstrates the best of what can be achieved for the community when Rotarians pull together.

Project organiser Richard Gibbens had this to say after visiting the Foodbank. "I was shocked to see how little food they had in stock and was advised that the store cannot open every day now and have to limit people to a visit only once every 14 days."

Supporting high-risk young people

Local icon and honorary member of Rotary Hutt City, Billy Graham, leads the Billy Graham Youth Foundation, working with high-risk young people through physical and social development. The Kauhanga - Creating Sacred Pathways programme run by the Foundation will receive $1.953 million over three years thanks to funding from the Proceeds of Crime Fund. Rotary Hutt City member the Hon. Chris Bishop marked this milestone event with Billy and the Prime Minister, along with gym members.

Mixing mud and fundraising

Each year, club members work as volunteers at the Wellington Tough Guy and Gal Challenge event, New Zealand's iconic mud run series. The race day this year was fine and calm, but the 500+ competitors still managed to get thoroughly covered in mud. Club members handled registration, manned water stands, and served as marshals around the course.

Lifting the Lid

The pressures faced by young people today, growing up in a world of ‘everywhere, all of the time’ social media, are well beyond those encountered by previous generations. Sadly, not every young person is able to cope with those pressures, with the result that our schools are facing the challenge of students with mental health issues – a challenge that schools are under-resourced to meet.

The Lifting the Lid programme is a practical and straight-forward response to this need. Rotary clubs in the Hutt Valley are stepping up to raise funds that can quickly be channelled to local secondary schools to allow them to access professional counsellors and medical professionals and other intervention mechanisms.

In April this year, Lower Hutt Rotary Clubs championed the Harmony for Hope concert, with Orchestra Wellington and supporting solo performers. Rotary has created the Lifting the Lid Hutt Valley Charitable Trust, which is now applying funds raised from the concert and early-stage grants, at Hutt Valley High School, Naenae College, Wainuiomata High School and Taita College.
